Samburu County is in north-central Kenya, spanning approximately 21,000 square kilometers. With a population of approximately 320,000 inhabitants, the county is dominated by the Samburu people, a pastoralist community closely related linguistically and culturally to the Maasai.

Samburu County is renowned for exceptional wildlife diversity and the unique Samburu ecosystem. Samburu National Reserve, located on the Ewaso Nyiro River, protects populations of five distinctive species found in this region but rarely or never elsewhere in Kenya: the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx. These species adaptations showcase evolution in arid African landscapes.

The Samburu people represent a distinct pastoral community maintaining traditional pastoral lifestyles while adapting to contemporary changes. Warriors (il-murran) and age-grade systems, distinctive beadwork, and the red shuka (cloth) worn as traditional dress characterise Samburu cultural identity.

Maralal serves as the county headquarters, a highland town with cooler climate than surrounding pastoral rangelands. The town provides administrative services and markets for pastoral production.

The Ewaso Nyiro River, flowing through the county, provides the critical water and vegetation that support both wildlife and pastoral communities. Dry season concentrations of wildlife along the river create exceptional viewing opportunities.

The Maralal International Camel Derby, an annual event attracting international visitors and media, showcases the county's camel-based pastoral culture. This event represents cultural expression and tourism development.
